CONFIGURATION OF RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE

Establishment of the only biomechanics laboratory at the level of Medical Schools in Greece through which research training is carried out, while software for the design and simulation of difficult hip surgeries was developed.

A large Community research project was undertaken under the OP for Research and Technology II program to develop a personalized type of arthroplasty and based on these results arthroplasties are now being produced by a Swiss company.

CLINICAL WORK

Surgical Experience with participation in more than 25000 surgeries covering the whole spectrum of Orthopedics, Reconstructive and Traumatology, but with a clear focus on what is defined as Reconstructive Orthopedics and Traumatology of Adults with a number of surgeries over 12000.

INITIATIVES

• First application in Greece in 1982 of cementless hip arthroplasty and ceramic arthroplasty
• The first arthroplasty seminar with live transmission of surgical procedures in 1986 and since then the institutionalization of these seminars with an average of 4 per year, in which dozens of orthopedic surgeons were trained in new data. Since 1991 planning of surgery and selection of implants by computer; work that was at the world's leading edge
• On my proposal, establishment of the Hip and Knee departments of the Hellenic Association of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, and the Hip and Knee Research Society of which I am the president, and on a joint proposal with Professor Elias Lambiris, the establishment of the Department of Intermedullary Nailing at the Hellenic Association of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, and the joint organization of many relevant seminars
• One of the pioneers in the application of computer-assisted surgery (CAOS) and application of surgical navigation systems
• With a common protocol with HSS Hospital, application of the minimally invasive posterior MIS (PoMIS) technique in hip arthroplasty
• The world's largest series of arthroplasty surgeries for patients with congenital hip dislocation
• Monitoring of arthroplasty progress with the EBRA program
